Self-powered IoT - the route to a green energy transition

The mega trends that are affecting the energy market today is a reduction on fossil fuels, with renewable energy making its way onto the stage. Fossil fuels are dominating today with an 80% market share – but are predicted to decrease to ~20% by 2070. Solar energy is expected to take a central position in the future energy market.

The energy industry is shifting towards a more decentralized energy production system. The shift is facilitated through energy being harvested through different energy harvesting solutions. The shift allows for less dependency on wired energy, resulting in greater flexibility.

Today’s digital landscape is developing and is resulting in an increased number of devices, which drives a demand for wireless and battery-less devices / sensors. With the advancements in energy harvesting technologies that has taken place recently, the prospect of powering IoT devices from harvested energy have increased.

Within the EU, buildings are responsible for 40% of our energy consumption. Improving the energy efficiency in buildings will be important.

Today, roughly 75% of the EU building stock is energy inefficient. This means that a large part of the energy used goes to waste. Such energy loss can be minimised by improving existing buildings and striving for smart solutions and energy efficient materials when constructing new houses.

Sustainable and healthy buildings can be achieved by optimization using IoT, but it will require a lot of sensors. The digital transformation drives the need to measure everything that happens in the physical world.

The main solution for powering sensors today is either by wire or by battery. Wired solutions are good when building new facilities, where you can plan for the wires from the beginning. It is also reliable, but the wiring normally becomes more expensive than the actual sensors. Battery powered solutions increases the flexibility of placement and retrofitting of existing buildings. The drawbacks are the maintenance cost for replacing the batteries during the products lifetime and the potential risk for regulations of disposable batteries.

The new approach is to use self-powered sensors, that harvests energy from natural sources already available. This presentation will talk about the different ways of harvesting energy from the ambient environment and discuss the pros and cons of each area.

Lighting Management: standards, legislative framework and response to energy certification systems

The energy emergency due to the war situation in Ukrain, has increased the urgency of reducing the energy consumption in buildings. The Lighting Management Systems besides controlling light according to users needs and the availability of day light, also help in reducing the consumption with HVAC systems when linked to the BMS systems. Knowing how to implement a lighting management system using standards and answering the requests from legislation and certifications programs is of great interest to everyone involved in building construction and management.
KNX is the most common global Standard for Building Automation and together with DALI offer some of the best solutions for Light Management Systems. In this presentation I will address how to design and install a LMS with DALI and KNX and the technology of motion and occupancy detectors. How to link the Lighting Management System to a BMS, benefits and framework with legislation and Energy Efficient Certification Programs, such as with LEED, AQUA and Others.

Horizontal vs vertical system architectures - how to demolish silos

Traditional building services systems have been vertical architectures – each function such as HVAC controls, lighting controls, meter monitoring etc. are delivered as separate working system comprised of sensor and actuators connected to controllers which are connected to one or more network managers which are connected to supervisory software and, more recently and sometimes to cloud application. This approach makes data sharing and integration difficult to achieve, hindered further by the proprietary nature of the communications between some or all of the layers.

Horizontally architected systems offer a different approach, which enables much easier data sharing between devices at all levels, and avoids some of the layers as well. This talk explores the opportunities and challenges of choosing a horizontal rather than a vertical approach to smart building systems design, and the role of open protocols, and device & data modelling standards in facilitating greater openness as well as unlocking value from the building data.

The Digitalisation of Lighting – Burden or Opportunity? How Qualified Bluetooth® Mesh is Changing the Role of Lighting in the Intelligent Building

  • The current general perception of intelligent lighting is that it is more a burden than an opportunity. To energy managers they are energy hungry items that must be tamed. To a facilities manager it is an infrastructure that is often neglected, difficult to manage, impossible to program and re-program and is expensive to maintain. To building owners they are depreciating assets with limited value beyond their primary function of delivering light.

The digitalisation of light and using technologies such as qualified Bluetooth mesh is challenging the paradigm of the role of lighting in the intelligent building and changing the perception of lighting from burden to tremendous opportunity. In this presentation, let us show you how qualified Bluetooth mesh enabled lighting can deliver rich, insightful data from all over your building and pave the road to a world of opportunity.

Managing IoT Security in Smart, Connected Buildings

Today’s critical buildings and facilities have a rapidly growing mix of hardware and connected systems, which means buildings technology can no longer live in autonomy. Firmware, cloud services, and integration to drive not just automation, but deep insight requirements inspired by building analytics’ interest (driven by AI and ML) have introduced a technological shift, making interconnectivity of building systems and solutions a norm, not an exception. While this offers many advantages for customers and manufacturers alike, it also opens many securities risk vectors. The mix of systems and IoT devices introduces a realm of problems, traditionally nonexistent just a few years ago. From BMS/EMS systems to lighting systems, to HVAC, and water each new system on a network introduces a new potential vector of attack. This presentation will strive to explain and offer answers to this growing security concern for system manufacturers, software platforms, and end-users alike to help prevent the next irreversible security breach.

Cloud IoT Connectivity with UDMI Schema - a manufacturers viewpoint

Google have pioneered a philosophy for taming the IoT and provide a structured, secure and well defined methodology for connecting devices to Cloud IoT Servers to allow ingestion of building data in a structured and machine readable format.

This is new ground in what is otherwise an arena that is ill defined and susceptible to rampant use of unstructured, insecure and proprietary connection protocols which if uncontrolled can lead to supplier lock in, cyber-exposed and unmaintainable solutions for building operators and owners who are seeking solutions for Smart Buildings that are secure, standardized and future-proof.

The three pillars of the Building Operating System are DAQ, DBO and UDMI. This presentation lays out why Delta Controls, a well respected authority in BACnet and driving force behind the protocol that made sense of Building Automation, thinks that Google's BOS is an important development in the emerging world of IoT Connectivity for Smart Buildings

Beyond Lighting – Why Connecting With Your Data Via API’s is so Important

Designed specifically for professional lighting applications, Bluetooth mesh is the first communication standard that brings wire-like reliability to wireless control systems. Once deployed, a Bluetooth mesh-based lighting network can provide the infrastructure for both lighting and non-lighting services, effectively acting like the building’s nervous system.

Smart buildings are becoming an element of competitive advantage for commercial building owners, driven by the ability to use the data generated to improve energy performance and enhance the experience of the people who work in them. For this to happen, integration with external systems is key and this is where APIs play an important role.

Public APIs allow customers to access the data from their Bluetooth mesh lighting networks in real time, connect these networks with other building automation and management (BMS) systems, and build completely new applications on top of them. In addition, as an open standard, Bluetooth mesh opens the door to achieving the interoperability that is needed for truly smart buildings. In my presentation I will describe how the APIs work and give some examples of services that can be built using them.

Building automation in relation to the 2022 building regulations revision

UK Building regulations were updated on June 15th this year. This was a direct route to tackle climate change and reduce energy use.
What implications do these changes have for building design? The new Part O may mean less glazing, smaller windows or maybe even the end of those fabulous floor to ceiling South facing glazed walls?
But building automation can offer the "alternative approaches" as laid out in in the regulations that allow architects, designers and consultants fulfil their clients' desires for those glazed facades. Dynamic shading, integrated HVAC and constant lighting control can be simply achieved.
This level of building automation is an exciting opportunity for the integrator. Find out what you need to know to make it happen?
