The Convergence of Facilities Management and ESG in the Built Environment

Wednesday 18th October 10:00 - 10:45

Energy Management Theatre

Building owners, operators and the facility professionals responsible for managing distributed portfolios are feeling significant pressure to adopt and maintain sustainable practices while leveraging new and existing technologies to minimize the negative impact humans are having on the environment. Our society as a whole and stakeholders across the built environment are emphasizing the adoption of ESG strategies while scrutinizing the capabilities and efforts of the service providers tasked to maintain those facilities and critical assets within them. Businesses who demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility will be rewarded for their efforts in a myriad of ways from securing more business, retaining valued clients and helping improve our world by minimizing carbon emissions, extending asset life, etc.

In addition to the environment and social benefits , ESG policies and outcomes associated with implementing such strategies can have a significant impact on a company's financial performance. Companies that fail to adopt ESG strategies or address those risks may face significant financial or "brand" risk. However, those progressive organizations who proactively address ESG concerns will benefit from lower operating costs, improved "brand" reputation, and access to new markets and uncover new investment opportunities.

In this session we will explore - at a high level - what ESG is and where it plays in the management of the built environment. We will discuss how the convergence of facilities management with ESG can drive operational efficiencies across a distributed portfolio. We will explore opportunities that exist when owners and operators embrace sustainable practices to drive down operational costs and reduce the environmental impact of buildings and facilities.
