In his Presidential Address in May, Kevin Mitchell, the President of CIBSE said “Inspiring and supporting the next generation of engineers will help society solve the big technical and scientific challenges of today and tomorrow”
He went on to say: "Research shows that the most talented young people - those who have a choice of profession - are increasingly drawn to careers where they believe their work will have a positive impact on the world. I would argue that there are few careers that offer more opportunity to deliver real change than that of a Building Services Engineer,"
"If we can inspire people to join us – people from a range of backgrounds who reflect the communities we serve – if we can do that, our ability to problem solve and innovate will increase exponentially".
This session on Inspiring the next generation will cover and explain how everyone of us here at the Smart Buildings Show can be part of launching these careers and ensuring the UK has the required skills in this crucial sector.
InTandem Systems Ltd
Jon is Managing Director of InTandem Systems Ltd, a successful BMS and Integration Company operating mainly in the South of England.
He graduated from UoP with a BSc ‘Engineering with Business Studies’ then later achieved FCIBSE and CEng. After starting out with Landis & Gyr, an opportunity to run a controls and automation company was irresistible and this lead to challenges ranging from developing telephone operated lighting controls to medical electronics as well as process controls and automation (inhaler testing for Shearing Plough) and hydraulic valve flushing for Vickers
After 12 years in this sector and identifying a gap in the market for a customer-led (as opposed to product-led) controls company, InTandem Systems Ltd was formed.
He is on the Industrial Advisory Board for both Havant and Southdown College and the University of Portsmouth and the improvement for vocational training and creating opportunity for Young Engineers is a core value.
Jon was elected as BCIA President for two years in 2018 and is currently a Committee member on the CIBSE IT & Controls Group. He & InTandem Systems have won several national CIBSE & BCIA Awards including Outstanding Contribution by the BCIA & the coveted CIBSE Employer of the Year Award for the development of young engineers (twice!!)
